Years back, an internet speed of 100 Mbit/s was considered fast. Internet service providers had both the power and an excess of capacity. But with speeds ever-increasing, that same capacity slowly started decreasing.
So, how are ISPs working to solve this issue? They prioritize users' traffic, such as browsing and streaming, whilst throttling other types of traffic. Because your ISP has no insight into your VPN connection, it defaults to throttling your speeds.
Poor VPN client performance on Windows
Most operating systems include VPN clients as built-in subsystems. You’d hope for those to be optimized and perform efficiently, and whilst most are, Microsoft’s are not.
On Windows, solutions such as OpenVPN, WireGuard, or SoftEther usually provide a better VPN experience than the built-in VPN client. Still, you have to deal with Microsoft’s inferior UDP protocol support. Combine that with ISP throttling and you’re left with a poorly performing VPN.
